Comments on blogs

1)I visited Denis’ blog. He has written about stereotypes about Russia and I found his blog as very emotional. The author has demonstrated that he really cares about negative image of his native country, but I do not agree with him in several points.
First, the media is under strict control of censorship and government in Russia today. It is impossible to say that the media are at the same position nowadays as they were in USSR. Yes, the media have some opportunities to criticize the government, but these critics should be within rules which the government permits. It is kind of well-controlled critics. If journalists begin to write and say something more than it is allowed, they are murdered like Maxim Zuyev and Politkovskaya.
Second, I do not agree that there is no racism in Russia. If I am not right, how the author can comment murders or fights based on race differences which are not rare in Russia? Also how Denis can comment words in Russian language such as “churka”, “hach” and “uruk”?
Denis, how can you comment all of these mentioned above facts?
More information about this blog you can find here: http://den-den-den-denis.blogspot.com/

2)The next blog I visited is “Media Decreases Privacy” by Peter Cizek. I absolutely disagree that the media has negative impact on our privacy. Disadvantages of the media are not significant; mostly they are because of low level of the ethics among people. People who do something illegal must know and remember that they will be punished anyway. People who care about virtual “private life” should be more focus on real “private life” and spend less time in the internet.
I also did not like two pages which he has recommended to visit (www.youtube.com and www.yahoo.com). This is kind of trick, because all of us (students from M&S course) could recommend absolutely the same pages or www.seznam.cz, www.google.com and state, that “On this site people can read the news. Every single day there is something (image, video, audio) that was taken or made without acknowledgment of the person that is considered in that particular medium”.
More information about this blog you can find here: http://meidapeto.blogspot.com/

3)The following blog is written by Michal Klicnik about censorship. This blog is focused on porno and violence censorship. The author also provides us information about the situation in Australia and China in this field. I basically agree with his position.

4)Myo Ryu concerns her blog about “Media Portrayals of Groups in Society – Gender Stereotyping and White Privilege.” It is one of the best blogs from our class, well- structured, useful pictures and video, interesting writing style, and the author shows that she really cares about this topic. No points to argue.

5) The next blog I visited is written by Martina Slozilova. Muslims in the media is an example of that, unfortunately, the media sometimes tell people what to think, but not to what to think about. I agree that portrait of Muslim in the Western media is mainly negative. Sometimes “Muslim” is synonym of “terrorist”, but if we use the same principles and stereotypes about communities, it is possible to say that all “Catholics” are “pedophiles”, American style of education in high school encourages children to take a gun and kill each other, that is not true, no doubt!
Western people should understand that Muslims are similar members of the world society and they are not more dangerous than atheist or Christians. Every religion or ethnic community has its good and bad representatives. On the other hand, Muslim leaders should contribute more effort in creating fair image of Islam in the Western world. They should pay more attention to every day communication with public.

Academic essay

The media is very important part of society today. According to Todd Nesbitt, the lecturer of and chief Communication and Mass Media department at UNYP, sport media is 30% of the whole media industry, which is no doubt, significant part.
Sport is a business today. But it has been changed significantly since money came to sport. The purpose of any kind of sports and Olympism is the aspiration to perfection, improvement of own physical opportunities and skills, and uniting people and creating frindship atmosphere. Money changed sport and made it worse. As it was said by UEFA president and very popular football player Michael Platini: "20 years ago people went in for sports to keep healthy and today also to earn money."

But not only sportsmen have opportunity to earn big money, but also sports managers and the media make huge money. It is possible to say that sportsmen and sports clubs are slaveries of the media and absolutely depend on it. Today the main purpose of sport is achievement of as highest performance as possible and making money from that and sometimes it looks unethical. For example, famous French football player Thierry Henry was involved into big scandal because he had scored a goal by hand (see more on the photo) and did not confess in it immediately. He did it because of big money influence. Moreover, it is important to highlight, that FIFA did not punish him or French football federation strictly, because qualification to World Cup by France benefits more than qualification by Ireland. French team is more popular and therefore more people will look at the World Cup 2010 all around the world and, therefore, broadcast revenues will be higher with French team as a member of World Cup than without it. Also French tourist and funs are more than Irish and, without any doubts, they will spend more money in South Africa during World Cup that Irish would.

The media also depict positive or negative image of sportsmen. The vivid examples of the significant role of the media in creation of the image are famous players such as Carlos Tevez and Luis Figo, who transferred from one club to thier primary concurents. For example, "Sir Alex Ferguson has accused Carlos Tevez of betraying Manchester United by indulging in a deal with Manchester City" (Top News In) and the media support critics, but if banker transfers from one bank to another one, does employee become an enemy for majority of his/her ex-colleagues? The question will be “No”. But in the case with sportsmen the media created negative image of these players because “hot” news sell better, it helps to catch and maintain interest. The media use marketing and advertising instruments in order to increase revenues.

It is also important to mention dishormony among types of sport. For example, hockey, basketball, baseball and football are very popular and therefore has higher profitability than judo or voleyball. For example, David Douillet is less popular than John Terry who has never won nothing except English Premiere League. This happens because football is more popular than judo and the media influence.

The next point of critics about the modern sport is advertising. It not is a secret that companies pay significant amounts of money to be promoted on the sports clubs production, but sometimes as in the case when BWIN and AC Milan partnership, sports clubs do not think about negative consequences of this kind of cooperation. Why? Because BWIN offers more money than other companies and the club which have to be competitive and fully depends on money had to chose money rather than ethics.

In conclusion, the media should change its vision on sport in order to play more positive role in society. The media should not only pursue a sensation and give something "hot" and to be focus on making money as the media do it today, but the media should really care about ethics, help to develope "Fair Play" principles, make people healthier, and contribute more significant efforts into making the world a better place to live.

Article #2

One of the consequences of the media influence on sport is commercialization.

According to the president of sportive marketing Margy Lang “The advantages of the commercialization of sport are made much clearer in these two weeks of Summer Games, than perhaps at any other time. There is no better example of the commercialization of sport in the context of its advantage in moving sport forward.” (Advantages of Commercialization of Sports)

The author is arguing and quoting the president of the International Olympic Committee Dr. Rogge, that "Without the support of the business community, without its technology, expertise, people, services, products, telecommunication, its financing - the Olympic Games...cannot happen. Without this support, the athletes cannot compete and achieve their very best in the world's best sporting event.", but The Olympic Games could be happen without high technologies and telecommunication and they were successfully organized before era of commercialization. No doubt, the Olympic Games in that case would be not popular as they are today, less number of people would have opportunity to watch it, and finally, the Olympic Games would not be profitable as they are today. For example, “Los Angeles made a $215 million profit from the 1984 Olympic Games… NBC's recent $3.5 billion deal with the IOC for broadcasting rights to all winter and summer Olympics between 2000 and 2008.” (Big business demands a corporate Olympics)

The next author’s argument is “Again, without the commercial partners and sponsors of sport, where would sport be? Sponsorship and partnerships create opportunities for sport to flourish, to develop and to thrive among the marketplace competition and forces“. (Advantages of Commercialization of Sports) This remark is a vivid example that sport cannot exist without the media & money and it is only huge business. The author tries to use method of manipulation called “appeals to threat”, but sport existed before commercialization and not sport decided the media as a partner, but the media decided sport as a good product which would be sold without problem anytime and anywhere. Moreover, accordint to the Olympic Charter the main purpose of sport is making nation healthier and promoting atmosphere of friendship, but the media and commercialization destroyed this principles and the main purpose of sport is making money today.

High sports results are the main purpose of sport today from the childish and it is common tendency when child do not have opportunity to be involved into sport, because he/she does not give high results.

The International Olympic Committee and other sports organizations such as FIFA and NHL are influenced and depended on the media. Commercialization is a consequence of the influence of the media on sport and the model which exists today has more shortcomings than advantages.

This article is about one of the most succesful sports business projects in the world NHL.

The first part of the article tells us about the attractiveness of such events for fans (When I read that I also wondered why hockey was usually played indoors. It could be real fun to watch the great professionals performing for us in the open air. And unlike basketball for example the players would not face a problem of getting cold. So the general idea is pretty simple. Open-air hockey is nice. But it does not exist on a regular basis. Why? Because it is unclear how it will perform from the money point of view. Although John Collins, the NHL's chief operating officer (hockey league has a CEO like any American corporation) thinks it has its chances: “It goes to the core of what is a significant business opportunity for the NHL. It lets hockey fans for one day at least forget about their own teams and just celebrate the emotional connection they have with the game.”

The main reason for sports to exist (competition and show for sports fans) is dead. It is decided whether to introduce open-air hockey not according to the opinion of the sportsmen or fans but according to the size of TV audience and the Sales of Winter Classic jerseys.

Event #2

Since the childhood many people used to buy clothes and accessories with label of famous clubs, they experience for all the successes and failures, they wanted to be more successful and beautiful like their favorite football players. Players are important people nowadays because they are symbols of success and examples of how average person can become rich and famous to achieve their hardworking and talent.

In 2006 there was a great corruption scandal in Italian football that influenced negatively not only Italian football but all sport industry in the world and consequences of the corruption scandal such as weakening of FC Juventus, AC Milan and domination of Inter harm football industry until today all around the world.

Since big money came to sport, clubs' revenues depend on the sports result and their performance. For example, Champion League UEFA is a business project and "for just reaching the Group Stage of the UEFA Champions League a club will earn €3.8 million, for simply participating in the 6 group stage game (so even if the club loses all 6) the teams get €3.3 million (€550,000 per match) and then for earning a draw in the group stage of the Champions League a club will get €400,000 (and €800,000 for a win)" (English-premier-league.suite101.com)Commercialization in sport and huge money impact encouraged clubs to make fraud and was the main reason of the corruption scandal in Italian football which damages repution of sport and vividly demostrates disadvantages of commercialization.

First, football is at the program of every Olympic Games and all figures of football, because it is a part of Olympic movement, should work under the principles of Olympism. It is important to understand what it means Olympism and to know the main goals of it from the side of ethics. (See more Olympic Charter)

Second, Italy is a very significant player in the soccer world and has rich traditions. Italy is four times World Champion and Italian football clubs are good candidates for sponsorship. All of them have a great history and they have lots of fans all across the globe. For example, according to Deloitte Football Money League, Juventus had total revenues €203.2m and Inter had €196.5m in 2009.

Third, this scandal demonstrated that idols (football players, coaches, and clubs) are not ideal, they are liars. Everything can be bought and everything can be sold in sold in sport. Nothing is fair everything is deception. This scandal is the collapse of ideals.

Fourth, the final punishments of the clubs were softer than original punishment. For example, Milan, Fiorentina, and Lazio had to transfer to Serie B, Juventus had to transfer to Serie C1, (BBC news) but finally as we know the first three clubs staid in Serie A and only Juventus transferred to Serie B. It is hard to say what is the reason to make punishment softer was, but I think that it was because of commercialization on sport and big political influence of Agnelli family which owns FIAT and FC Juventus and Silvio Berlusconi who is a famous Italian politician, media-magnet, and FC Milan’s owner.

Finally, this incident and Court’s decision was shown to young people that it is possible to buy “success” and will not be punished, if you are a part of the system, where money and the media play more important role than “Fair Play” principles.

Transfer from Manchester United to Manchester City made by Carlos Tevez was one of the most popular topics in football industry during the last season. It would seem that one player changed the club in order to continue its career. Many people do the same every year and not only in sport, but Manchester United and Manchester City are antagonists and have very bad relations between each other, although it contradicts to principles of Olympics, so it is a good topic to talk about for the media. Unfortunately, confrontation between clubs is supported and inspired by the media. "Sometimes you have a noisy neighbour. You cannot do anything about that. They will always be noisy," declared Ferguson. (Mirror Football)

Football matches between these clubs were one of the most scandalous and expected in the last European football season. Tevez was one of the reasons of the growth of interest for games between these clubs. The media supported and stirred up interest to these games by various ways and some of them were unethical. This lead to situation, when Manchester United players accused their ex-partner of perfidy “Neville thinks Tevez is over-priced and Tevez fires back that Sergeant Nev is an "idiot", a "boot-licker" and a tarado (moron)” (Guardian)

Confrontation was worsen to the situation that “Abdul Diouf was punched and kicked to the ground because he was wearing his brother's shirt from the Carling Cup final, with the player's surname emblazoned above the number 32 – as worn previously by Carlos Tevez.” (Guardian)

Everybody has a right to change working place and football players are not exceptions. They are people as journalists, but when journalist transfer from one newspaper to another nobody attains him, so why can the media persecute Carlos Tevez? The answer is sport and the media are partners and “hot news” will increase interest and revenues for football industry and for these football clubs particularly.

Recommended web pages

Internet is a very important part of media and plays an important role in communication between sport clubs and funs all around the world. There are three web pages which demonstrate influence of the media on sport.

One of them is that takes bets for tennis, basketball, football, hockey, box and etc events. It is important to mention, that Bet and Win Company is an official sponsor of popular football clubs such as AC Milan and Real Madrid. As it is well known for everybody gambling and betting on are very dangerous maladies, but company which provides this “service” has firm relationships with sport clubs and feels free to promote itself through them. As a result, clubs encourage people to malady and do not see nothing unethical in that “Real Madrid president Florentino Perez said Bwin was a loyal partner which understands sport"(www.bbc.co.uk)

Another recommended web page is http://www.vancouver2010.com/. It is an official web page of the Olympic Games 2010. It is possible to find all information about the history of the Olympic movement, schedule and all results from this Olympic Games and also information about Vancouver city here.

The next one is an official web page of Real Madrid football and basketball clubs http://www.realmadrid.com. This page gives opportunity to learn about history of the club, to know information about events with Real Madrid players, to know results, and also it has on-line store.
